Outdoor Cameras
Outdoor cameras are designed to operate reliably under harsh environmental conditions. When choosing an outdoor camera, be sure to check the specifications carefully to ensure that the device will be suitable for the environment in which it will be deployed.
Ingress Protection (IP) Ratings
Devices designed for outdoor use usually carry an IP rating which designates the environmental protections offered by the device. A quick reference of the most common IP ratings that are used for security cameras:
- IP54 – Protected against dust accumulation (dust protected) and splashing water from any direction.
- IP55 – Protected against dust accumulation (dust protected) and water jets from any direction.
- IP65 – Protected against dust entering (dust proof) and water jets from any direction.
- IP66 – Protected against dust entering (dust proof) and powerful water jets or temporary flooding.
Cameras with a protection class of IP65 or IP66 can be used in most outdoor applications without any additional protective measures. Devices with IP54 or IP55 rating should generally only be used in outdoor applications where environment factors are carefully considered unless using additional protections.
