Patch Panels
There are two main types of patch panels – "telco patch panels" and "network patch panels".
Telco Patch Panels
Used for connecting analog telephony hardware, such as CTI cards from manufacturers such as Digium, Rhino and Sangoma, as well as to traditional PBXs, these patch panels often utilize a 50 pin RJ21 telco connector (also known as an Amphenol connector) on the back, saving you the hassle of individually punching down each wire. Most high density analog CTI cards have an RJ21 connector too, meaning you simply need a patch panel and an RJ21 cable to connect your analog phones or lines.
All regular analog telephones and PSTN lines from your carrier as well as all of the telephony cards and hardware we sell use a single "pair" for each line, meaning that for most applications, you need a patch panel with "6P2C" connectors. This type of connector has 6 "positions" and 2 "conductors", which is the standard for RJ11 cabling. For most applications, you will need either the ICC 24-Port Telco Patch Panel (ICMPP024T2) or the ICC 48-Port Telco Patch Panel (ICMPP048T2), depending on the number of lines or phones you have to connect.
Some proprietary PBXs use two pairs for each phone, meaning that you would need a patch panel with "6P4C" connectors. This type of connector has 6 "positions" and 4 "conductors", which is a much less common configuration, and generally not used by any of the equipment we sell. If you require a patch panel for an application like this, you should consider the ICMPP024T4 or the ICMPP048T4. These patch panels have two RJ21 telco connectors for each 24 ports, so make sure you order enough cables.
Network Patch Panels
Network patch panels are much more straight-forward than telco patch panels. For all applications, you will need a patch panel with "8P8C" connectors. This type of connector has 8 "positions", and all 8 positions are conductors. For new installations, you should use Cat6 patch panels, to ensure compatability with future higher-speed networking technologies.
